Springtime for Diana

If the producers were smart, (no comment) they’d close before opening as the critics are just lying in wait (and Joe Allen most assuredly has made room for the poster)!

Already a "legendary flop"?

At the link is what would appear to be the first "Diana" review from a critic for a major NY newspaper.

How on earth do they intend to begin Broadway previews on November 2 when the show has already been dubbed a laughable flop?

Are they expecting to sell tickets to crowds interested in making mock of it?

Are they madly rewriting as we speak?

I think investors don’t see any money from subsequent productions

Unless the show opens and maybe even play 20 or so performances. I could be completely wrong about that. But if the show did have a national tour or went to london, the investors might think there is money to be made. And the covid relief money (which can be a few million for some productions) might require some performances to get it.

The British press have so far mostly been appalled, pointing out American lapses in the lexicon used in the libretto and myriad other insults. I don’t see how it could be comfortably embraced in the West End. And absent a crossover pop song - and it has no standalone number as marketing tool* - it’s a potential box office debacle. It’s also not cheap.

*Ghost at least had the interpolated Righteous Brothers; Uptown Girl doesn’t show up, its generic stand-in no substitute.

I don’t think it even has much regional potential. Maybe a non-equity tour with short stops is about it.
