Am I the only one????

After reading all the negative reviews and comments I had to watch "Diana The Musical" on Netflix and I really enjoyed it! The cast, the music, lyrics, precision choreography, the magic of the theatre when it came to costume changes--all in all 2 hours of entertainment!

For an orchestra seat? There were parts that were enjoyable, but the show is just boring and the songs barely serviceable. I don’t notice lyrics as much as others so I don’t get hung up on poor rhymes. But the songs sounded the same. I’m glad I have Netflix to watch it and I watched it all, but even more grateful that I didn’t have to sit in a cramped seat to see this on stage. I would have been so bored.

Call it Evita 2.0
I watched the show last night and overall enjoyed it. It’s not perfect and I’m not going to be singing any of the songs (unlike Evita). Over all I hope it is successful so we can see more Broadway productions filmed on stage.
It will be interesting to see if this will help or hurt the opening of the new Broadway production reopening next month. Audiences are still fascinated with the Royal Family. Hopefully New York tourism will be better in November to support this production.
BTW- I saw the last preview of Lestat. Diana was far better.

I enjoyed it from a "this is so campy it's fun" perspective.

Right. It's not a fundamentally different show than "Moulin Rouge", save that the latter has iconic pop songs and the former is pleasantly generic - but we go into "Moulin Rouge" expecting campy ridiculousness, and so it's okay when we laugh at the absurdities of musical theater (a number of the song cues elicit guffaws from some of the audience), whereas with "Diana" we view that as a failure.

I've argued elsewhere than independent of this project's disappointing execution, Diana Spencer is not really a strong subject for a musical. She has no accessible, understandable goal -- an I Want -- to drive her. She stumbles into the royal family, accommodates her husband's chilliness, 24/7 whine, and betrayal, and looks about for something to occupy and define her. She's mostly putting out fires, not driving herself or a show toward anything with enough specificity. Anastasia connected with many because the character's quest for loving family is knowable and touching. Eva Person, love her or hate her, possessed a compelling raw ambition, reason to follow her for two hours. Even shows that break structural rules require drive, i.e. Bechdel desperately wants to understand her father's closeted life and death; it's an investigation. The creatives of Diana can't decide if the show is a cautionary tragedy or a just -- worst of all -- "a portrait." That's why the character so often stands in the middle of the stage changing clothes while everything swirls around her.

The show's one theme, the abject awfulness of media, would only work if something new could be said about it. But chasing a woman all over the globe until she dies in an accident isn't much of a story, and the aftertaste is sad and bitter.

Good points all. I think the story they're trying to express is about her quest for love and how in failing to find that she instead finds purpose (say what you will about the bad parts, but the AIDS hospice scene was, I thought, very effective), and I thought the show was at its strongest when they were in the love triangle. But yes, she has a hard time articulating her goal, and the show doesn't quite give us enough insight into why she thinks she can find that love from Charles. The Crown did a better job with that, and I actually would have had a very hard time following the musical if not for watching the TV show.

Art is subjective. I’m glad you had fun.

I thought it was one of the worst musicals I’ve ever seen.

What were they thinking?
What a waste of talent.
I think we were entertained by how bad it was, but I’m not sure. We try to forget it.

Let me preface that I have not seen DIANA. While LESTAT was dreadful, there were some good moments in the score (but, I think Carolee Carmello could make any tune sound better than it probably is). Also, they did make fairly major changes between the SF tryout and Broadway (I saw both). The changes did not help. On the fence about seeing DIANA in the theatre for schlock value alone so avoiding the Netflix recording until I decide.

In 'Lestat,' it had to be Hugh

Hugh Panaro had two terrific solos in ''Lestat.'' One was the soaring ''Sail Me Away,'' and it can be found on YouTube.

The other was ''Right Before My Eyes,'' and Hugh beautifully reprised it at our ''Leading Men II'' concert for Broadway Cares.

Agreed on his performance. I just wish the material had been better. I actually preferred the SF version the ending was ridiculous but beautiful to look at.

Two bits stay with me:
The little girl singing More More More and Carolle Carmello in her Pirate outfit, or whatever it was, standing centre stage belting out some great song that made no sense.

"Dance of the Vampires" also set a standard for "So Bad It's Good"

though some of the songs in it were very good. The staging, direction and performances and some of the lyrics -- pure camp.

Alas, no. My claim to flops, stuck here in LA where we specialize in flop tv and movies, include ODYSSEY, THE BAKER’S WIFE (when Patti had just joined!), and just before the lockdown, the allegedly revised ROCKABYE HAMLET, now HAMLET: THE ROCK MUSICAL. The audience consisted largely of cast members’s relatives, so my daughter and I were trying hard to smother our guffaws.
