It was to be the rescheduled opening night but was cancelled. Presumably that’s why they waited so long, in hopes they wouldn’t have to cancel again.

I am sort of interested (and I mean no offense) in how you think the phantom opening night audience got into the theater with hundreds of people standing in front of the doors.

I meant no offense if that’s the case then fine.
I have had experiences when I have been notified that an opening night was changed and I was asked to changed tickets I had bought for that night. It happens. Also this was not mentioned in any reviews. Thus my assumption.
It’s a short show . They could have put it on at 8
Or 6 if it’s an opening night . It was just an odd experience for all who were there. I look forward to seeing it and congratulations to all on the reviews.

I also assume you are a friend of the production or an Afilliate with MTC and know this as a fact and I respect that and stand corrected.

Reviewers don’t go to opening

It wouldn’t be in the reviews because they were already written; reviewers haven’t attended the actual opening night in decades, they go during the final week of previews and file their reviews in advance of the actual opening.

It’s amazing how angry and paranoid you are based on a completely erroneous impression of how theater works.

You said you stood corrected while still asking why the reviewers didn’t write about the injury. Now you know.

I’ve had only one show cancel performance

That was Fela! And they didn’t cancel until about 10 minutes before curtain. It was a Sunday night so there wasn’t much else playing to run to another show.

I’ve had two shows cancel mid-performance. Jolson in Sydney Australia because the lead actor hit his head in the first act. They started the second act and then had to cancel. I guess he had a concussion and they brought him to the hospital. Another was a local production of present laughter and one of the actresses was sick and left at intermission and they couldn’t get the understudy in time.

I was at a performance of In the Heights in the spring of '08 that got canceled due to technical problems. I ran into Jeff Seller in the lobby and had a conversation with him. He sent me a complimentary cast album CD of the show because of the cancellation. I ended up seeing the show on my next trip.

We made it through about five minutes of "The Slug Bearers of Kayrol Island" during which the projections repeatedly crashed, prompting a full-stage Windows error screen, before they finally called the show and had us all reschedule for a later performance.

My show was a matinee. Lin actually came out and told the audience there would be a late start. He came back a few minutes later and began chatting with the audience and taking questions. A couple people asked him to sing something, but the only song he felt comfortable singing was "Happy Birthday". After about a half hour the show had to be canceled.

The only time I can remember not having a complete performance was I saw a show at New World Stages whose name I cannot remember. There was at most ten minutes left and the fire alarm went off and everyone in the complex had to exit and stand outside. This went on for a while and I'm pretty sure the end of the show never happened, although I may have just given up and gone home because the show was basically over.

In your defense, I have never heard of there being an "opening night" without an actual performance, so I can see why you leapt to a mistaken conclusion.

Has there ever before been a Broadway "opening night" with no actual performance?

I think I mentioned this at the time it happened: I happened to have tickets to the rescheduled "opening night" of the most recent Glengarry Glen Ross revival. It should have been a tipoff for me that I wasn't asked to give up my ticket, but I was very excited and got a little dressed up. Then the performance itself was exactly the same as any other performance. No red carpet, no press, no speeches, no celebrities, nothing. I read later that what we would normally call the opening night party still took place on the original day. So the opening night really was just the release of the press embargo, and it sounds like that was what happened tonight as well.
