| I saw it on Monday. It has many good points, including some beautiful music, a very interestingly portrayed mother -- relationship, and a powerful depiction of the ugly impact of sexual abuse on a young life. Against that, I thought the climactic scene wasn't as gripping as it should be; it doesn't build to a pitch of emotion that one wants at that moment. Also, for the first time in my experience, the entire cast seemed overwhelmed by the Met orchestra, to the point that at times they were difficult to hear. Whether this is due to the sweeping orchestrations or to a cast that isn't used to projecting in that enormous house, I'm not sure. But I bet that seeing it in the cinema may be the best way to enjoy it. | |

| I was also there Monday (front of Family Circle), and didn't notice more than one or two times where the orchestra covered the singers, and just at very thickly scored times. There are a handful of debutants in the cast, but the principals and the majority of the rest aren't new to the house. The ending, I think, suits the text. The emotional heights are earlier (and the final scene is picking up where the opening scene left off); the end is about moving on. |

| I had a problem at times hearing the singers from the Family Circle for "Der Rosenkavalier" (and others around me were also complaining about that), so it doesn't seem unique to this one production. | |
