In an interview, Rachel Brosnahan said she based it on Jean Carroll. But I'm not sure I see that: Carroll used to tell her jokes quickly, figuring if one didn't land there was another coming right behind it.

I think that Midge (Brosnahan's character) does owe a lot to Jean Carroll, but Sophie Lennon—Jane Lynch's character—is more Diller.
