Howard Miller takes a look at Chicken & Biscuits at Circle in the Square:

"Family is a loaded word," to quote one of the characters in Douglas Lyons' Chicken & Biscuits, a mashup of broad comedy and domestic drama opening tonight at Circle in the Square. If the pairing of styles makes for a sometimes rickety whole, there is no denying that the comic side is often very funny, the dramatic side is often quite touching, and the spirit of affectionate caring speaks volumes to an audience weary of pessimism, anger, and cynicism.

Most of the reviews of C&B that I've read disparagingly mention that the running time is just over two hours, whereas the advertised running time is 100 minutes. Those 20 excess minutes mean a lot to a commuter or a person with a weak bladder. I hope they fix their website, ads and listings. Or, perhaps the better idea would be to cut 20 minutes from this play that seems to ramble on endlessly.

I see three issues in what you raise, one (misinformation=bad) with universal agreement. Weak bladders can be solved by an intermission, but that exacerbates the issue for commuters who want to get home. We seem to have lost our most powerful advocate for shorter shows that make the life of commuters better. :-)

Yet isn't it odd that most people have no trouble sitting through a 2+-hour movie without needing the washroom?

Except that's not true. People leave the auditorium during a movie ALL the time. Thankfully , it's usually not disruptive to the other patrons and it's certainly not disruptive to the "performers."

You are exactly right. Movie theater industry data from before the pandemic showed that upwards of 20% of a movie audience left the theater at least once in a full-length feature.

Re: Chicken and Biscuits--there seems to be a clear point an intermission could be put in--and might could help the show, actually. But apparently, the original plan of selling chicken and biscuits at this intermission was nixed by city officials, so they elected not to put in an intermission. Seriously, though, with the amount of coming and going in that theater, it is not really much of a disruption to nip out to the loo, as it were. Although, I very much agree that accurate running time--especially when the show starts at least 10 minutes after the appointed time--is a necessary change to the online materials. (I suspect without audience reaction, the show is 15 minutes shorter, but that is still longer than the stated time on official websites.)

The night we were there the ushers were telling everyone as they walked in that the advertised running time isn't correct. Doesn't help much for your planning once you're there, but at least you have the information now.

I agree about the extra 20 minutes if you are commuting as I. While I thoroughly enjoyed it, it needs about 15 minutes worth of trimming.
