Jackman did (sort of) become a star in the London revival of OKLAHOMA!, which is the project that really brought him to attention and led to him getting cast in the first X-MEN movie, which then brought him the kind of wider attention that actually made him a movie star.
Had X-MEN not happened, Jackman would still likely have become a top musical theatre leading man after OKLAHOMA! and might still have been able to break into film or television based on that.
