Hugh Jackman had his preliminary audition for the XMen film while still playing in Oklahoma!. This must have been an offshoot of his meeting with XMen producer LSDonner, so maybe he was already interested at that point to pursue a film career in Hollywood. But it was when he was asked to go to Toronto to do a final audition after Oklahoma! had ended its run that his pursuit of the role firmed up. Filming started on September 22, 1999 and he was taken in weeks after that. So, it seems that his name was never in the final discussions to bring over the production to Broadway.

Btw, I happened to have seen the Oklahoma! revival in London. I was there on a business trip when I learned that one of the musicals from a favorite songwriting team ( R&H) was playing. I didn't know the lead but I did think he had a commanding stage presence and a powerful legit stage voice. Fortunately, Trevor Nunn had the vision and initiative to film the production which he did while the production was in hiatus pending its transfer from the RNT to the Lyceum Theatre. He filmed it on a sound stage which gave him the advantage of filming like a movie ( with the benefit of retakes). But that was expensive - according to the company (Panasonic, IIRC) that provided the film cameras, it cost something like $ 4 Million in 1998 $$.

There are more details on the negotiations with American Equity re the transfer of Oklahoma! from the book of Maureen Lipmann ( Aunt Eller) called "Lip Reading".
