Lotte Lenya created the role of Jenny in the original German production of The Threepenny Opera when it debuted in a Berlin theater in 1928. Lenya repeated the role in the 1931 German film version.
When the show debuted on Broadway in '33, it was a quick failure. However, in the acclaimed '54 revival, Lotte Lenya again played Jenny and won a Tony award for her portrayal.
