You're responding to something that hasn't been suggested. You're right, not everyone wants to change in a space with someone of a different gender. In this case, Reid did not want to change in a dressing room with men, as Reid does not identify as male and did not feel safe in a male space. Based on the reporting, it seems that if a gender-neutral or genderqueer space had been created (which is also a gender-specific space), there were other cast members who would have voluntarily opted to use such a space as well. At no point was there pressure on people to use a dressing room they wouldn't want to use based on their gender... except for Reid, who did not feel safe in the male-identifying dressing room.

The idea of the gender binary is so ingrained that we have a hard time even thinking about alternatives that don't involve completely eradicating traditionally gendered spaces. Now, until we break out a blueprint of The Pantages and look at how the "Hamilton" company was divided amongst its backstage rooms, we don't know what options there might have been for this. Maybe putting up a curtain was truly the only option and Reid was being difficult. Or maybe there was space that could be used in different ways and the resistance from the binary community was so strong that the immediate response was to throw up their hands and say, "We can't figure this out, here's a sheet be grateful." I don't know, and unless you know how that building is being used, you don't know either.

But the idea that simply attempting to create a gender-specific space that is gender neutral, queer, or non-binary is impossible because it would force us to change gender-specific spaces for single genders is patently false and is one of the major forms of oppression that gender queer and non-binary people face in a world that demands they conform to a single-gender in order to function and survive in this world.
