|If you read the times article that was linked this teacher states very clearly why he showed this film.
I am surprised that people here seem to think it is about a musical score when he makes no such claim. "Professor Sheng...said...that he had chosen the Olivier film simply because it was 'one of the most faithful to Shakespeare.'" He planned to discuss how Verdi adapted the play to opera.
Basically, it sounds like he did not trust the students to read the play.
