|"We're not watching 'Othello'...": so, just so I know, who anointed you as the royal "we" here. For someone who claims to stand for multiple points of view, you seem to assume it's fine to presume that your perspective on a performance stands for all viewers.
As to your name: gee, some might say that the colonialism inherent in your appropriation of a former British colony for your screen name, is analogous to the unfortunate choice by Olivier in the 60s to use blackface to play 'Othello." And history does not matter--only present day standards, so I think, if you were genuine, you would change your screen name to something more representative of your identity. Even the term "ex-pat" reeks of Graham Greene-era paternalism towards the exoticized other. And how nice of you to refer to your whiteness every time you post on these topics. Very performative. As Katharine Hepburn said of Meryl Streep, Click, click, click.
As to your welcoming that conversation with "someone who is harmed or directly affected by that choice," well, as a white man, tell me how YOU are directly affected by all these issues of race, and don't try to use an adjacency argument (some of my best friends or boyfriends, as the case may be): as Margo Channing said, It won't play. Either we all are harmed by racism or other forms of discrimination (in different ways, to varying degrees, granted) or ONLY members of the group named or discriminated against are. You as a white man, by your own logic, should not engage in such discussions, if you wish to brush off my calling out of your HILARIOUS punning as a problematic choice--my guess is most of the people on this board have people they love or care about (romantically or otherwise) who are not white, so if you are somehow "harmed" by Sheng's choice because of your relationship to non-white people, I suspect many others would have equal claim--maybe even Sheng himself (though, I realize, in your narrative, he is probably not worthy of any consideration). Can't have it both ways--at least not as far as I am concerned.
How enlightened of you to acknowledge (in a different post), the potential ageism in your insistence on describing Sheng by his age (66--gasp!), and how hypocritical to deflect it by saying, more or less, "I'm only doin' it 'cause all the other kids were!" I'm 63 (64 before the end of the month) and my husband is 83--we would have known that showing Olivier's Othello without some framing might cause problems. Your invoking of age is another instance of your dismissing people who don't follow your party line. Exactly how old are you, Vera, the truth?
Or, on the other hand, just don't. I'm sure you have better things to do, like polishing that halo.
