Fathers were expected to be far more authoritarian in 1947, the year of the film--let alone in the 1890s, when the play is set--than we may be comfortable with today.
As to the "unseatment," Life With Father is still the longest-running Broadway play of all time. It was finally surpassed by Fiddler On the Roof, which beat Father's record shortly before it closed in 1972. |
