(New York City, December 14, 2021) - We Won't Sleep, a new pop musical based on the true story of Jeannette Rankin, America's first congresswoman, will hold industry readings by invitation only in New York City on Thursday, December 16 and Friday, December 17.

The production features music and lyrics by composer, actress, recording artist and activist Ari Afsar (Eliza Hamilton in Hamilton, "American Idol"), book by America's most produced playwright Lauren M. Gunderson (I And You, The Book of Will), choreography by Yusha-Marie Sorzano (Alvin Ailey Dance Theatre) and direction by Erin Ortman (Real , One Thousand Nights and One Day). Jen Bender is the lead producer.

The world premiere production of We Won't Sleep will be staged from May 31-July 3, 2022 at Signature Theatre in Arlington, VA.

We Won't Sleep electrifies the life and history of suffrage activist, social worker and Montanan Jeannette Rankin. Elected to Congress in 1916-three years before white women were granted the right to vote-Jeannette found herself to be the only female voice within the halls of power to vote on women's suffrage. We Won't Sleep heralds one person's radical voice in America's ongoing journey toward equal rights for all and the ongoing fight for voting rights today.

Karen Olivo

Karen Olivo, who won a Tony Award for Best Featured Actress in a Musical for West Side Story and was Tony-nominated for their performance in Moulin Rouge! The Musical, will play the role of Jeannette Rankin in the reading. The cast for the reading will also feature Jevon McFerrin (Hamilton), Adam Hyndman (Hadestown) and Myra Lucretia Taylor (Tina-The Tina Turner Musical), with Chloe Campbell, Kyla Garcia, Em Grosland, Jorrel Javier, Madison McBride, Diane Phelan, Andrea Prestinario, Cindy Tsai, Emara Vee, Princess Victomé and Brandon L.Whitmore.

Congresswoman Rankin (R-MO) boldly paved the way for resistance through law and government. She was not only the first woman to win a place in the American federal congress, but the first woman in the democratic Western world to be voted into national office. She knew how to work the system and had to fight like hell to make it happen. She didn't win every fight and she didn't become a national hero, but she made a difference in Congress, in women's rights, and to the thousands of women who wrote to her saying, "I have never had a woman politician to write to. I think you will understand."

Mary-Mitchell Campbell is the Music Supervisor. Cynthia Meng will serve as Musical Director. Casting is by Tara Rubin Casting. General management is by 321 Theatrical Management.
