| well, this clip captures (and accentuates) all the worst aspects of the production: the arch and antic staging, the really-off costuming that makes it hard to believe these people inhabit the same city or era or friend group, the sour tone. Unfortunately, you don't get any sense of what the production does well: some great comic performances (Elder, Simard, Sieber, Doyle, Fitzgerald), some really well-done numbers and a wonderful orchestra. And for those of you who are wondering: yes, it's actually staged like that, and while the concept works a little better on a stage, the cramped "room" staging still underlines the frenetic mugging and manic 'comic' action that makes the whole thing feel overeager and overdone. And I didn't buy it as contemporary NY at all (even though we have a whole "big" stage moment when the huge title treatment for COMPANY--yes, it's a set piece on the stage-- reconfigures to spell out "NYC"). This is one of the most talented collections of people on a Broadway stage...armed with a great score and financed by deep pockets. This is what we got? |
