Here's a go: the stories were painfully cliched and predictable. The use of the narrator trope was so hokey - it reminded me of 'Waiting for Guffman' in its faux folksiness. The whole mood was ponderous and self-conscious. Upside was high-level musicianship, which was the only thing that prevented my departure at intermission. I was disappointed because I had been excited to see this show and remember loving 'The Weir'.
As to the nearly universal raves - I'm baffled. New York magazine was not a rave but you are right: almost everyone else seems to love it. |
