| This is almost impossible to answer. The short, universally applicable version is that if you're coming to New York solely for the purpose of theatergoing, it is obviously not an ideal time. I know almost no one who hasn't been affected by having had tickets to a show that's had to cancel a performance or 3. By the spring the virus may be more in hand, and who knows, not only entire cancellations but even masks and mandates could be almost a thing of the past. On the other hand, what were you planning to see? If it's any of these (Caroline or Change, The Lehman Trilogy, Trouble in Mind, Flying Over Sunset, Freestyle Love Supreme, Waitress), then they're all definitely closing in January or February, and if it's any of a handful of others (Thoughts of a Colored Man, maybe Mrs. Doubtfire or Girl from the North Country, possibly even Company) then depending on what happens during the cold months after the new year there's a fairly decent chance that 1 or 2 of those won't be running by the spring as well. If you have tickets for 8 shows my guess is your list includes some of these, in which case now might literally be your only option. Obviously if a performance is canceled you will automatically receive a full refund. And there's enough playing, off-Broadway as well, and nearly everything at a discount, not to mention music and movies and everything else going o in New York over the holidays, that you should be able to find something else to see or do. (Also, it's worth noting that theaters depend on each other more than ever at this point in history – if you have tickets for American Utopia and Caroline on a Tuesday and Wednesday, and find out at 3PM on Tuesday that one of them is canceled, it's not out of the realm of possbility that if you go ot the box office of the other one and explain the situation, pending availability they might be able and willing to switch your tickets to a day earlier). But if you're the kind of person who wants a rock-solid, well-ordered trip, aren't the type who likes surprises, and would rather spend the night in your hotel room rather than deal with some possible last-minute improvisation and inonvenience, then your instincts might be right to reschedule. Mileage may vary, and only you know your priorities and personality. |
