They’ve been billing this shortened, English-language version for years as their holiday treat, and not without reason: the puppets and the fantastical setting make it something of friendlier option for young audiences.

In the alternate 20-21 season that we didn’t get, the Met had programmed a new production, restored to its full length and sung in German. Clearly, they felt that Taymor’s version was the safer bet this season… though that might have been with the expectation that we’d have more tourism by this point.
