TWO very different immigrant experiences are being portrayed as part of a story of waring "families" who keep two young lovers apart. It is quite literally Romeo and Juliet adapted for a current day (in the 1950s) NYC scenario with race being the key reason for the hatred among families.
This is not, as is commonly and willfully now misunderstood, a musical ABOUT brown people or the Puerto Rican immigrant experience, with a few white characters thrown in as villains. |
