There were several dark-skinned Latino actors in the In the Heights film, but they weren't leads. One lead was Afro-Latina, but is light-skinned. Another lead Corey Hawkins is very dark. I'm sorry your friend's enjoyment of the film was diminished.
I saw the new film of West Side Story yesterday. When it had been announced some time ago that Ansel Elgort had been cast as Tony, I was disappointed that Spielberg didn't cast a Polish-American actor in the role, which I could rightfully have taken as an insult to my white relatives and my heritage. Nevertheless, I accepted the fact that moviemaking is a business, and we can't all get what we want every time. Elgort was excellent in the role. The film is very good. My enjoyment was not diminished.
BTW, my family, which today is mostly Latino, discussed the upcoming West Side Story film at our Thanksgiving dinner a few weeks ago. I could not convince any of my nieces, nephews, or cousins of Cuban and/or Mexican descent to give this new version a chance. None of them want to see it. Just saying. They also hate the label Latinx. Different strokes, I guess. |
