| Yes, non of the leads are Afro-Latin *except of course for one of the 2 female leads, who is (as far as I recall reading)... who I guess doesn't count because she's much lighter-skinned than is common in that community? Not sure why it's suddenly okay, in this situation, to erase her actual racial identity because it suits the narrative of the issue (which is a very valid issue anyway, doesn't do any good to act like there is NO ONE Afro-Latin in it, let alone in the leads -- the issue is clearly about light-skinned latinx being favored and dark-skinned latinx being very underrepresented, that's an unfortunate issue and oversight, but that doesn't make it true that no one in the cast is) ... and the black actor is playing a black character, so obviously his darker skin doesn't count for this representation. But I went into the movie knowing this was an issue being called out, and I saw dark-skinned Afro-Latinx people all over the screen. Am I remembering this inaccurately? I definitely was keenly aware of the issue and how often I saw the community scenes include dark-skinned (presumably Afro-Latin) people. So also, how can it be assumed light-skinned latinx people are not Afro-Latina if one of the leads IS but is too light-skinned for it to matter. If she is, then how is it so discernible that *no one* else is? I'm genuinely curious, I'm not asking to undermine or dismiss the issue being raised. I really don't have anything to say about the degrees of appalling it is or isn't that this community was represented in the film, in terms of speaking/singing characters, with Latinx but not Afro-latinx people (except for the star actress who is light-skinned Afro-Latina)... I am not familiar enough with the population of that neighborhood at the time it takes place. But I thought it was incredible to see a cast entirely made up of non-white people in a generally English language movie, killing it, and short sighted to come out rallying against the movie for this when it opened. It's a milestone movie musical, and should have been discussed as such. |
