| Without details, I have it on some pretty personal-to-him authority, verbally at least, from several sources, that Hal was gay. He was surely capable of having intercourse with his beloved wife (I don't say that sarcastically), and she with him, but it doesn't seem like his interest in women went much beyond that, so I don't know if it's fair/accurate to describe that as bi. Whereas Bennett seemed to have at least one major relationship with a woman (McKechnie) that was not based in partnership but also sexual chemistry, right? And not with the goal or result of having children together. I'd say that's a better case for bi, though I can't speak to the particulars of how/why their relationship worked or happened. (If a man only has sexual interest in 1 women but many men, is he bi, or is it just that 1 person who happens to not have a male body who does it... I don't know, again, I don't know his sex life enough to analyze with any value... not that my analysis would be of value to anyone anyway). I also think/have been told by people in the know that many more nyc theater notables of that era were in open and/or swinging relationships than is written about or discussed in decent society, as it were. I think these things are much more complex than simply "sex with men but married to a woman who you had kids with means you're bi" and "happy marriage based on two people who are sexually attracted to each other or unhappy marriage of two people who aren't"... and of course having sex with men, even mostly, doesn't automatically make you homosexual rather than bisexual, despite my assertion that it *seems* Hal may have been more likely described as gay than bi... what do I know, I was there and I'm not him. I just wish people/fans/history didnt' still describe and think of him as straight. |
