| Just want to say I disagree with them both too. The mix of the "low"ness of the book and "sophistication" of the score is part of what makes the show work so splendidly as a musical rather than a vaudeville or sketch comedy show. It is a satisfying mix. And beyond that, the show works... it's worked for thousands of performances, for many productions, over many years... with the original staging and cast, and without them. Clearly dissecting what doesn't work about it is faulty in the premise because it *DOES* work. So his assessment of what doesn't work is inherently inaccurate. If the musical's score doesn't work with the book then it couldn't work as a musical... but this is a musical that famously does work. (despite the supposedly problematic nature of some aspects of it to modern audiences/cultural commentators) |
