| I suspect the OP is referencing -- MILD SPOILER -- the arbiters/therapists, who are purposely loquacious and offer an almost separate send-up of navel-gazing academics. As the evening wears on, a little of their commentary goes a long way for some of us. I don't think it has anything to do with a 2021 audience impatience with traditional dialog-heavy playwriting. It's a specific layered annotation that footnotes the rest of the piece. It can feel like an interruption, not because it's spoken, but because it segues into pretentious double-speak. We grow impatient, perhaps wishing to draw our own conclusions rather than have events interpreted. |
