| “That 40% of folks who are not vaccinated, unlikely will be. Dr. Gupta often uses the phrase of giving vaccinated people an "off ramp" as we need to live with this as a normal part of life.” This is everything, and beyond just the theater. But if audiences aren’t getting sick from seeing shows (everyone being vaccinated, and for the time being wearing masks), if casts are fully vaccinated with no one suffering major symptoms, and with the new Pfizer anti-Covid treatment pill leading to zero deaths in their recent study and less than half a dozen hospitalizations, it’s clear that we’re ALMOST at the place where we can safely see the off-ramp, and if that 40% of holdouts aren’t going to do anything to get vaccinated, the rest of the world needs to take that off-ramp and not feel hesitancy or guilt. I agree that the month of January will likely be brutal, both in terms of another surge and in terms of Broadway closures. But here in NYC, with over 90% of adults at least partially vaccinated (and almost 80% of the full population, remarkable considering that vaccines for children have been available for only a few weeks) – by February or March I’m betting people will have reached the tipping point of positive tests being normalized enough that plans, premieres, and productions won’t be canceled or changed left and right “out of an abundance of caution” any more than they are for the common cold, flu, bronchitis, strep throat, or pink eye. With vaccines and boosters readily available, and treatment options that effectively neutralize the threat of severe disease (never mind death), entire industries are not going to be hobbled by this any longer, let alone at the mercy of those who are still digging in their heels preaching civil liberties and refusing to get the shot. Life moves on, and a majority of the population will be not just more than ready, but completely comfortable, leaving the recalcitrant ones behind, come what may. |
