| A new narrative has emerged in these discussions: if you don't recognize the groundbreaking innovation in this production you're a staid retro-loving fuddy-duddy, your taste mired in museum replications of original productions. As if this particular staging, both its conceit and execution, becomes some kind of generally accepted litmus test for being open to theatrical innovation. Invariably, someone says, "Well, Sondheim loved it, so that's good enough for me." But respecting the composer-lyricist's investment in its artistic success -- these are his changes, after all -- and having an entirely different response to the finished product are not in opposition. Not adoring Bobby becoming Bobbi does not mean you've got antediluvian ideas about gender and society. It's an anti-intellectual argument, more Sondheim fan mania than theatrically justified. Arguably, being analytical about how successfully the revisal nails issues of gender and serial emotional monogamy might suggest a complex reaction to the issues dramatized, not merely remaining a 1971 OBC loyalist. I'm a little weary of being called a hater (more on the other board, to be fair) because I don't find all of these decisions consistent or workable, starting with placing the action in contemporary NYC. | |
