During "Cool", I just kept saying, "throw the gun away, Tony, just drop it in that hole". The number was fine, but the way it was reimagined for the story didn't quite work.

Agree that Kushner added too much talking; while it made sense to flesh out the characters, this was the first time I've seen "West Side Story" where I wasn't rooting for Maria to wind up with Tony. Some of that was Elgort, but I think it was mainly that in painting Tony as a Bad Boy with murderous impulses, the death of Bernardo didn't feel as accidental or forgivable as it has in the past.

As for the choreography... Peck has done beautiful work. But with this grittier take on the material, it was much more difficult for me to accept that these feral street boys would suddenly bust out some ballet moves while running through the street. I actually thought that the sequences with the Sharks were more effective and in character.
