I had a very similar reaction. The balance between straight drama and musical sequences felt off, and I really missed Robbins' choreography, especially "Cool."
One of the reasons I find film musicals less enjoyable than stage musicals is that the inherent realism of film can make the musical numbers seem incongruous. Exacerbating this problem was that Kushner's dialogue and generally more realistic screenplay made it harder for me to suspend disbelief whenever the characters started singing and dancing, thereby blunting the musical numbers' emotional impact. Put simply, it felt like the screenwriter and the songwriters wrote in conflicting styles - one more naturalistic and the other more poetic. |
