| Exactly. The '61 version of West Side Story was very stylistic -- it created its own world in which dance, music, and songs were the norm and told the story. Spielberg's film is very good, beautifully acted and sung, but also gritty and realistic. The story seemed driven by dialogue rather than music and song. I enjoyed it, but there was no magic. The '61 original is a classic -- the new film is a fine, solid movie, but not a classic. Just IMO. |
