Flying in the Park with George OR Follies over Sunset

Saw "Flying Over Sunset" last night and tried hard to like it but in the end I didn't.

Yasbeck and Cusack gave it their all but the book and the lyrics let them down.

Was struck by how Sondheim - hued the show is.

In the first act they're all talking about seeing the different more intense colors when under LSD and all I could hear in my head was "Sunday - on the blue purple yellow green water"

And in the second act each character has his/her big number to describe his problem and all i could hear in my head was the "Loveland" sequence from "Follies"

Curious. Anybody know if Lapine offered this material to Sondheim before going to Kitt and company? Found the lyrics to "Sunset" particularly paint by numbers - wondering if a better lyricist would have cracked the nut on this one.
