the lyrics to Grey Gardens, especially act two, are some of the best lyrics written any any modern musical... maybe any musical, period.
It's a shame he's never again come close to that level of writing in the musicals I've seen him write for since (though I did like War Paint).... but don't take away that he is actually quite an excellent lyricist.
