| I wouldn't put "The Boy From Oz" anywhere nearly in the same list with much better shows such as "The Drowsy Chaperone" (or even "Millie," with its only half a score by Tesori - I would have loved for her to have done a fully original one). But perhaps that's just me. What is "The Golden Age?" Does such a thing exist tangibly? Or is is all in our minds, Follies-like, as a former time we remember with a bit too much nostalgia for our own good, and feel we can never really get back? I tend to think EVERY generation complains that the new stuff isn't nearly as good as what they remember of the old stuff. And not just with Broadway - but I'm always amazed how many opera fans seem to live in a world of sanctified dead singers, where no one singing today could ever compare to what they remember Tebaldi sounding like when they were young, etc. 50 years from now, fans will be lamenting that no one sounds as good as Netrebko anymore. And on it goes. "Kids - I don't know what's wrong with these kids today"...;-) |
