I hope I didn't imply that I thought the postwar era in the U.S. was the "golden age" of everything--of course there was plenty wrong with American society then, to which as a gay socialist man I was not blind then and have not forgotten now.
Posterity will show what survives from American pop culture of the mid-20th century vs. the early 21st. I'd be happy to make bets on it, if I had any chance of collecting--but I won't still be around when posterity's verdict is in.
One thing I can surely promise you, though: In 100 years, nobody except for specialist historians will be looking at jukebox musicals--if even they do. Nobody else will know who the dead artists were, or remember, or care. The generation that did care will be gone. |
