| Years ago, I'd say before "The Producers" introduced premium prices, producers still looked to make a profit but to also rely on regular theatergoers, who might go to quite a few shows, taking chances on previews and also on even non-smash hit shows, rather than having to budget as much and limit their attendance based on ever-increasing prices. In the film "Broadway: The Golden Age" some of the actors recall it was sometimes actually cheaper to go the theatre than to the movies. So prices weren't stratospheric. These audience members also were bringing along with them many times their children or other people in turn, many times making them into regular theatergoers who would spend money in the future. I posted on a thread a few months ago when someone asked what an equivalent ticket price in 1964 for "Funny Girl" and other hits was running, was equal to in todays dollars. AlanScott backed up the numbers I gave, which were a lot less of one's salary then vs. a huge percentage markup nowadays. Several posters here were, it seems, almost stunned. So I understand Pokernight's frustration. It's possible if you live in NY or nearby (or maybe even out of town if you can manage it) to see shows based on things like TDF, some papering services, standing room, discounts, etc. But some of those things get expensive if you're trying to be a regular theatergoers as well. There are plenty of great shows to see that aren't the anointed talked-about ones, too, btw, and many of those do still charge reasonable prices or have discounts. But yes, I've seen some really famous stars and productions years ago, and they didn't cause quite as much a dent in my budget nor cause me to limit and be more choosy about what I can and cannot see. It used to be more a question of just "how can I get tickets?", not whether "can I afford it?" or "do I want to pay THOSE prices?". | |
