I hear you, and you make strong points. I think where we differ is in our estimation of the music of some of these shows. Every few years, we have a new Broadway jukebox musical repackaging Gershwin tunes for a mass audience; is it any more wild to imagine a new production of “Moulin Rouge” in 2121 with some of the greatest pop songs written between 1960 and 2020 (no doubt with some new music tossed in as well)?
(I mean, presuming climate change and civil war haven’t ended the whole Broadway phenomenon.) |
