I'd be surprised if anything on Broadway is doing really well at the box office this fall and winter. The backbone of the Broadway audience is made up of the same people who are likely to be most at risk from Covid. I live in California, but I hardly know anyone over 65 who is willing to go out into an enclosed public place right now, not even to see a movie. If those people's New York counterparts aren't going to the theater either, and add to that all the sudden performance cancellations, which not only frustrate what audience there is but put the producers out of revenue as well, then I'm only surprised that more shows haven't announced their closings.
I am a little surprised that Jagged Little Pill was one of the first holdovers to announce its departure--I wouldn't have guessed that--but hardly shocked. |
