WSS and Annie

I saw WSS last night. I really loved it. Sure, there are things I can quibble about, but on the whole, I was drawn in, was very appreciative that the score was kept relatively the same, and I bought the majority of the changes and additions. The only problems, really, were that the theatre was relatively empty, and that there was a small group of what seemed like high school kids "out on the town" who were there to amuse each other more than watch the film. But luckily they were outnumbered by those of us who really did want to see the movie. One of the biggest surprises to me was how much of a difference Moreno's new character made - I never doubted she'd be good, but didn't really know just how the character was going to play in context. I shouldn't have worried.

I wasn't as "bored" by Elgort's Tony as many seem to have been - for those that didn't buy him as a convict I would just counter that neither did David Alvarez's Bernardo read "boxer" to me. But no matter. I liked that Zegler's Maria had, for lack of a better word, much more cojones than usual. I though the new backstories did add something significant - not the least of which is how the gun that eventually takes Tony's life ends up in the story in the first place.

Tonight, having not seen Annie Live yet (I DVR'd it but never sat down to watch it), I figured I'd take advantage of the repeat broadcast. As much as I was enthusiastically taken on the rollercoaster of West Side Story last night, I was...just...not...getting...into...this tonight. This didn't feel like Annie to me - it did feel like everyone (including the heavily cued audience) was trying way way too hard, and not earning it. The kids were fine, Hannigan was too weird, and though I was glad to finally see "We'd Like To Thank You" in a filmed version of the show, it seemed when they started to sing that we got some of that typical homogenized "studio chorus" sound that just sounded way way too nice for a bunch of street people. The whole thing just felt off to me. (And the updated arrangement of "Tomorrow" really really felt out of place.) I'm sure at some point I'll come back to watch the rest of this - but tonight this felt like a big slice of "meh" to me. Sorry...

Looking forward to the HBO "Reopening Night" doc at 10:00. :-)
