It might not have been losing ground; it could easily have been in that now-precarious state where it was making enough money to be profitable as long as it could keep running. Once they lose the lucrative two weeks of Christmas and New Years and are staring down the uncertainty of when future closures might happen, suddenly doing break-even or better becomes financially untenable.

ryhog has been singing this song all season, and I think he's going to be proven right.

They also made a real mess out of how they handled the Jo storyline; the show was selling itself on its wokeness, and a core portion of that audience soured on them because of the way they mismanaged things. And they also boxed themselves into a weird space where they couldn't really sell Lauren Patten's performance, even though she was the Tony winner and a major reason to see the show.
