| Because Christopher Bond thought she should. It does go back to Bond, who has Lovett include even more disgusting details than in the musical. In fact, Sweeney even asks her just that in Bond. Todd: I hardly wonder your trade's bad if you talk like this to all your customers. Mrs. Lovett: Well, sir, I speaks as finds I do. [sic] I think the main reason is because she is very lonely. She has no one to talk to. She is in desperate need of someone to listen to her troubles and perhaps commiserate. And she just wants to get things off her chest. It's also a way to prevent him saying to her that they are disgusting, as if she didn't already know it. ”Good God, woman. How can you sell this disgusting gloop?” Maybe she has already had enough people say that to her (in the past when people occasionally did come in for a pie), and she has decided it's better for her to put it out there herself first. He'll find out soon enough. And if she tells him before he eats it, he can't reasonably demand his money back or refuse to pay. He had been warned. My guess is that she did not open the shop until after Sweeney was sent to Australia. I would think she opened it after her husband's death as her financial situation gradually worsened. The question of whether she recognizes him immediately is one every actress must decide on for herself. There is a better case to be made for her recognizing him immediately in Bond, but then deciding she was probably wrong. Personally, I think it would be a mistake for an actress to decide that Lovett is immediately sure it's Benjamin Barker. |
