The first Omicron death has been reported in (perhaps no surprise) Texas. An unvaccinated man in his 50s with contributing health factors. I find it intriguing that much of the Twitter debate goes like "this variant won't kill anyone, so why doesn't everybody calm down?" This is the predictable Rip Van Winkle approach, as if nothing happened in 2020 to change the way we view epidemiological implications of any Covid illness and death. The Omicron arrives as we're far from finished battling the Delta (see stats everywhere). And since this country has been so "divided" (that's a euphemism) about the pandemic, vaccine, and protocols, we're hardly in a position to gloat about our ability to combat a variable with unknowns. But New Yorkers have been among the smartest, and there's reason to believe the Broadway community's diligence and early efforts to stop infection in its tracks will pay off as winter wanes.
Keeping the shows open that can survive is something to celebrate. I plan to double mask everywhere but home and keep going as long as there's a show to see. If theater is playing in January, I'll be at every Wednesday matinee, vax card, TDF voucher in hand. |
