Oh, I think an actress can play that, and I would be pretty sure that some have. I am just doubtful that she would be worrying that he might leave if she does not warn him about how bad her pies are. If she recognizes him, she knows he is there looking for Lucy and Johanna, and he is not going to leave because of a bad-tasting pie.

If memory serves, Sondheim said she was very ”chatty,” and it was important to establish that in the first song, as well as to make her funny. Sometimes I do misremember these things. Maybe I will go looking for the quote later.
