| For the most part I loved this WSS. The greatest score (musically speaking) in the history of musicals was served by the wonderful playing of the NY Phil and most of the singers (with the exception of Elgort's Tony: his voice was ok but his phrasing was wooden). Also, the staging (not the choreography) of some of the dance numbers was an improvement on the original, especially America. However there were some things that didn't work for me at all, the biggest being: (Spoilers) "Somewhere" was given to Rita Moreno's character. I can understand that they wanted to give her a song, but this song belongs to the romantic leads and they need it as part of their poetic bond. The finale fell flat to me. It just wasn't as tragically moving as in the 1961 movie for many reasons. As wonderful as Zegler is throughout, she doesn't match Natalie Wood in this scene. Also, since they didn't sing "Somewhere" earlier, they couldn't have her start to sing it as Tony was dying. What she sang instead just didn't work in this context. Also When the Jets lift Tony up, in the original, he starts to fall, giving the sharks an initial reason to help. Here, that doesn't happen, so the sharks helping seems contrived. Finally the original had the police there through the scene which for me made it more dramatic. Here, it ends with the police arriving after the body and procession has gone, and the movie ends with Rita Moreno's character taking the arm of Chito. Huh?? Why end with that? |
