"Somewhere" was given to Rita Moreno's character. I can understand that they wanted to give her a song, but this song belongs to the romantic leads and they need it as part of their poetic bond.

"Somewhere" is sung by an offstage voice in the stage show as written. Tony and Maria only sing the very end of it as a reprise at the end of the ballet. (And then the bit of it when Tony dies.) They never ever sing the full song. So it doesn't "belong" to them, and they don't really "need" it, as they have other songs that represent their bond.

What [Maria] sang instead just didn't work in this context.

Sure it did. It was literally the first thing she ever sang to him (back in the Balcony Scene). It made perfect sense to me in this context.
