She starred in the original London production of 'Paint Your Wagon" opposite her father, so I'm wondering if Lerner and Loewe had her in mind before or alongside contenders like Julie Andrews for "My Fair Lady"? Of course, Ms. Howes later went on be the first Eliza replacement on Broadway. Was she waiting in the wings (at least possibly waiting for a phone call or on a list to be called) at the time that Andrews was flailing in the role during rehearsals and was on the verge of being sacked? Ms. Howes did have a really beautiful voice and was a really lovely woman. If you ever get the opportunity to see the wonderful film of James M. Barrie's "The Admirable Critchton", retitled "Paradise Lagoon" in the U.S., she's excellent as the at first snooty daughter. Plus, of course, she'll always be known as Truly Scrumptious in the family classic "Chitty Chitty Bang Bang", and she's on the OCRs of other shows, including "What Makes Sammy Run?" and "Kwamina".

I saw her at a Lerner & Loewe concert around 1989 at the old NY State Theater, in a tribute to Alan Jay Lerner. Many stars that evening, including Julie Andrews finishing the evening with a set of L&L songs, quite loverly as ever. But the most memorable were Jane Powell and Lee Roy Reams singing and dancing to "Why Did You Believe When I Said I Loved You When You Know I've Been a Liar All My Life" from "Royal Wedding" with Powell recreating her film number 39 years later and still quite a dancer! But Sally Ann Howes singing of "Heather on the Hill" was quite memorable, in a class by itself, rather wistful and beautifully sung, and made you wonder that if circumstances had been different, she could have been just as big a star as Julie Andrews (or they could have almost traded careers). Especially when I saw them both on the same bill, it was remarkable. Rest in peace.
