President of AEA takes on the League's insult to actors

"My educated guess is the newer shows maybe have understudies that aren’t as efficient in delivering the role as the lead is. Some of the older shows have more experienced understudies and more experienced swings. I know one show last week where the lead was out, the understudy was on vacation, the swings were covering other parts, and they just didn’t have enough people to stand in."

"Hey Broadway League! *My* educated guess is that when employers consistently reject our efforts to negotiate for more swings, understudies and sub stage managers, because the industry model has grown dependent on people working sick/injured, it’s short sighted and unsafe. For the record, understudies, subs and especially swings have the hardest jobs onstage, and are literally keeping Broadway alive right now. I could never do what swings do, and I doubt y’all could either. Being onstage without adequate rehearsal is scary, stressful, and often unsafe, both for a new cover and for the rest of the performers. Finally, that other thing Actors Equity pushed and pushed and pushed for? You know, hitting pause on opening night parties until we got thru this mess? Maybe that one could use another look too."
