So as you describe the stage version, Somewhere maybe doesn't BELONG to Tony and Maria, but it's still connected to them, which allows them to sing it at the end, whereas in the new film, they have no connection to the song.
I don't think having them sing the whole song takes away from its universality, because by then, we've come to identify with them and they are really singing it for all of us.
I guess for me the song is so great that it deserves more than what the new movie gives us of it. For me it's that moment when she stops singing as he dies, and the strings take over the melody. I'm a basket case. The new movie just doesn't match it.
