I guess for me the song is so great that it deserves more than what the new movie gives us of it. For me it's that moment when she stops singing as he dies, and the strings take over the melody. I'm a basket case. The new movie just doesn't match it.

I will say that I don't disagree with you, lol. With the exception that since the movie chose to handle the song in a very different way, I didn't really hate what they did. And in general, I mean, there were no turtles (or ballet conductors) on speed, no big stars that were cast despite their lack of singing ability, no new songs that didn't match the tone of the original score, etc. I'm more apt to forgive the changes that weren't quite as effective as in the original, because in general, I think Spielberg's heart was in the right place.

BTW - a fun story about the last scene onstage. Back in the early 80's, as a high school student, I played piano in the pit for a (really excellent) summer youth production of the show. Back then, I think the orchestra parts were still the original ones (they've since been redone/revised in cleaner computer format). The piano part had an interesting note - it said that I was to provide a "sneak pitch" for Maria for that a cappella "Somewhere" moment, by playing her first note simultaneous with the gunshot (so that the audience wouldn't hear it). So that's how she originally got that pitch - and that's how we did it as well. The problem was, especially as a young performer who really wanted to watch that scene and "get into it," I instead had to concentrate on synching up with the gunshot at that tense moment onstage. But it felt like a very special moment as well - one of those "behind the scenes" things that the audience would never be aware of.

The current parts no longer have that indication. But if I were doing the show, and it were viable for the pit pianist to do it, I might suggest it. ;-)
