Though he has considerably more to do in the film thanks to the placement of Cool after The Rumble, Ice is essentially Diesel renamed. It's Diesel who Riff chooses to fight Bernardo in Arthur Laurents's book, it's Ice who Riff chooses in Ernest Lehman's screenplay. The film's Jets don't include a member named Diesel.
