| While we were not close friends I knew Harvey as a acquaintance through mutual pals and he about as charming and entertaining as a person could be. I actually first met him in my late teens when he was starring in the tour of BARNUM and I was ushering at the theatre. I think he could tell I was starstruck and hoping to become a performer so he was very kind and encouraging. When we met in NYC some 25 odd years later I felt lucky that I got to thank him for being such an inspiration. My partner and I actually saw him in a restaurant one night dining alone near us and thanks to having met him on a few occasions we felt comfortable asking him to join us which he graciously accepted. I wish that dinner could have lasted hours longer as he was a joy to be around. Aside from being incredibly kind, he was also a man of integrity. I saw him being interviewed by a certain pushy, well known host of Broadway chat shows who wanted him to dish stories on a former co-star (who is famously a bit eccentric) and he was having none of it. He point-blank said this lady was a friend and he would not go there. I admire that kind of loyalty. I sincerely wish he had written a book and committed his amazing stories to the page. He was a font of Broadway history and lore and will be sorely missed.....and if I am correct, he was recently seen as the security guard at Gimbells department store in the new film of WEST SIDE STORY (having played mouthpiece in the original film). May he rest in peace. |

| He was a lovely, sweet man, as many have said in posts below. He also played Older Buddy in Houston opposite Marilyn Maye as Sally. I first met him in Omaha where he played Frank in SHOW BOAT, and Davis Gaines was Gaylord, and had the pleasure of visiting with him in Los Angeles when he was in LEAP OF FAITH. His part was unfortunately cut when the show went to Broadway. He had such a varied career and was in so many hit shows. I loved seeing him in the Central Park scene, "That's How You Know," in ENCHANTED but didn't know until tonight that he was in the new WEST SIDE STORY movie as a security guard at Gimbel's and somehow missed seeing him. | |

| I had forgotten Evans was in the Houston production of FOLLIES. I saw that and remember just being floored by Marilyn Maye, who at that time I was unfamiliar with. I saw Evans in my very first professional show. He played George Gibbs in OUR TOWN, alongside Henry Fonda, Jim Backus, Mildred Natwick, Martha Scott and Elizabeth Hartman (as Emily). Exquisite memories from that production and a perfect introduction to the magic of theater. | |

| I just read this sad news. Such a talented, funny, friendly and sweet man. I saw him as Young Buddy in FOLLIES four times. I’m so glad I got to know him in later years, even if for just a relatively short time. May he rest in peace. | |

| I recall reading he said something like, “When I die, my tombstone will say, ‘Here lies Harvey Evans. He was in FOLLIES.’” A great career, and from everything I’ve seen, a wonderful person. Laura |

| Saw him play Young Buddy twice when I was nineteen. A remarkably agile and effortlessly charming performance. Indelible impression made. On many. | |

| Harvey was one of the last true troopers. He started very young, and was able to dance in "The Pajama Game" & "West Side Story" movies, ( he was a huge fan of Doris Day in his youth), right off the bat. Harvey loved all of the traditions of the theatre. He always tried to attend the Gypsy Robe Ceremonies on opening nights. Knowing him for many years, I never felt Harvey really appreciated his talents. You could get him to talk about his experiences, but he never boasted. I am so lucky to have known this very talented man. | |

| I saw him perform many times and was thrilled once when I got to chat briefly with him. This is very sad news. I doubt that he was only 80 if he danced in The Pajama Game on film. IMDB also credits him as having danced in Silk Stockings in 1957. He would have been 16 when the films were released. That just doesn't sound right. |

| I may be wrong about this. According to BroadwayWorld.com, he did indeed make his Broadway debut at 16 in New Girl In Town in 1957. Whatever his age, a trouper in the best sense of the word. RIP. |

|
| And if he was 80, that would have made him 30 at the time of “Follies.” I don’t imagine he would’ve been much older than that to play Young Buddy, right? | |

| True. I just did not realize he had been quite so young when he started. I would have thought he was five years older. | |

| Ahhhh....a dear friend has spoken many times of the wonderful times he has had with Harvey Evans at the AEA Center, over lunch, etc. He sounded like such a sweet guy and mentor, and he worked with the very best. Yet another loss of one of the few links to the era which made so many of us dream. | |
