He was a lovely, sweet man, as many have said in posts below. He also played Older Buddy in Houston opposite Marilyn Maye as Sally. I first met him in Omaha where he played Frank in SHOW BOAT, and Davis Gaines was Gaylord, and had the pleasure of visiting with him in Los Angeles when he was in LEAP OF FAITH. His part was unfortunately cut when the show went to Broadway. He had such a varied career and was in so many hit shows. I loved seeing him in the Central Park scene, "That's How You Know," in ENCHANTED but didn't know until tonight that he was in the new WEST SIDE STORY movie as a security guard at Gimbel's and somehow missed seeing him.

I had forgotten Evans was in the Houston production of FOLLIES. I saw that and remember just being floored by Marilyn Maye, who at that time I was unfamiliar with. I saw Evans in my very first professional show. He played George Gibbs in OUR TOWN, alongside Henry Fonda, Jim Backus, Mildred Natwick, Martha Scott and Elizabeth Hartman (as Emily). Exquisite memories from that production and a perfect introduction to the magic of theater.
